Nowruz Day

On March 21th The Shanghai University of Political Science and Law invited all international students to attend an event dedicated to the Nowruz Day. The festival which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years, is deemed as the beginning of the first month of the Iranian solar calendar, the traditional Iranian festival of spring and is considered as the start of the New Year.

The term Nowruz is a Persian compound word which literally means New Day and itis celebrated by many groups of people in the Black Sea basin, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Western Asia, central and southern Asia (including countries such as Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan). The International Day of Nowruz was recognized by the UN's General Assembly in 2010 and was highlighted that the festival “promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighborliness, thus contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities”.

Celebrating Nowruz Day at SHUPL started around 5pm in front of the International Students Office after teachers made their warm welcoming speech in front of the gathered ones. Organized with a great effort of SHUPL teachers and students, the event created a favorable environment for the guests. Moreover, lights, specially prepared delicious food for this festival and music, appealing for everyone’s taste, brought additional joyous elements to the party.

After taking memorable photos with friends and devouring the food, students entertained themselves with dancing till late evening. All in all, the atmosphere at the festival bought tremendous joy and happiness and left all the participants of the day greatly satisfied and delighted. By celebrating Nowruz day, SHUPL once again strengthened cross-cultural relations among the students and their countries.  TextNini Chalabashvili)
